Bubba: Hey Forrest, I have an important question to ask you. How bout after we finish this here discipleship we go into the church plantin bidness?
Forrest: Ok
Bubba: I’ll tell you what…
And the rest is history. Two unlikely characters who would never be picked for anything very important. Nonetheless, as dim reflections of God’s grandeur – as if the more refined among us reflect Him more – our two protagonists embark on their plan. Of course in the movie it is the shrimpin bidness, but in this adaptation it is the kingdom.
In an age where books on management outweigh books on Jesus, faith and devotion, the simplicity of God speaking a vision to a man or woman is often drowned out by the background noise. I am involved in a church plant, and I can attest that the skills needed to manage the work are not to be underestimated. However, a simple man with a big vision always stands out to me. Why? Because management focuses on bringing order and efficiency to an already existing work whereas faith looks at nothing and sees what can be.
As leaders it is never our job to pick the team using the standards of this world. We need to have the prophetic eyes of Samuel who picked the youngest, David, to lead Israel. We need to believe in the significance of every Christian, and we need to constantly downplay our own importance. At best we are just equippers.
…but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. 1 Cor 1:27-29
